During the Free Banking Era (1837-1863) the US Government had opted not to implement federal regulation over banking.   Any private or municipal authority could operate a bank as long as they met a minimal set of conditions.  During this period state banks were free to design and issue their own paper money - these bills, called State Bank Notes, flourished.

This well worn example of a Civil War era one dollar bill is hand dated October, 1860 and was issued by the Andover Bank.   We will never know which residents passed it back and forth in our small town, but the bill itself remains a wonderful example of a long forgotten form of local currency.

This piece of fabric was part of a dress that was sent by a young Tewksbury schoolgirl named Susie to her brother George on May 1, 1870.   The letter she sent with the fabric talks about her teacher Miss Bowers, and that if the students are not absent, tardy, or whisper for the entire school term that they will receive a present.   Susie talks about visiting the Shepherd Garden hot houses to look at all the flowers.   Also noted is the purchase of a piano for Four Hundred Dollars, this would have been a very large amount of money in 1870.
