The "Almonts"

By Harold J. Patten

The "Almonts" were the first uniformed ball team in Tewksbury.

The above image was taken on the 19th of April in 1903.  Front row from the left; Thaddeus Chandler cf - George Marshall, Captain, pitcher and outfielder - Harold Patten 3b - second row James Scott rf - George Chandler 2b - Walter Baldwin pitcher and outfield - Harry Coombes 2b and outfield - third row Sidney Bull ss (not in uniform) - the second and fifth, names unknown, - Manager John Kelley - and George Buckle catcher.

Several years they won the Suburban championship.  Home games were played in the Spaulding pasture off of North Street, now the residences of the Foss and Patten families.  Each player bought his own uniform, gloves and bat.  All chipped in to buy the baseball, many times a foul ball fell in the pond back of home plate, a player would remove his shoes and stockings, wade in and search for the ball, when found the game could continue.
