It may surprise residents that just a century ago this was a very popular summer resort destination for people living in the big city. The popularity of this area was certainly driven by the fact that the Boston, Lowell and Nashua Rail Road had built a dead-end side track off their main line that led directly to "Silver Lake Station" and the two adjacent Ice Houses. Many of the homes in in this part of Tewksbury are former summer cottages that have been converted to four season homes. Today the Railroad is long gone and the area is no longer considered a recreational destination by anyone but residents that wish to spend the day swimming at the Wilmington Town Beach. These postcards of Silver Lake are all from the period between 1905 and 1915. If you have spent any time at all looking at some of these images, and you have actually been to Silver Lake, you might be marveling at how much the area has changed. On the other hand, how many of you are thinking that something isn't quite right with some of the pictures on these postcards? If you did a double take at some of these postcards and guessed something is wrong then you are right! The six photographic images are definitely of Silver Lake, but the rest are easily called into question. Although all postcards have printing that indicates they are from Silver Lake, in reality almost all of them are really full color stock images that postcard companies would print out by the tens of thousands. It was far cheaper to print out one stock image and then simply add in different names and locations using a black inked letterpress printing press then it would have been to create unique full color postcards for every single location around the world.
