The Brown Tavern was constructed by William Brown between 1790 and 1800 on the foundation of a previous structure, also owned by the Brown Family.  The tavern was a half-way house and local gathering spot.   It is rumored that during a visit to Tewksbury more than 125 years ago, President Andrew Jackson reportedly quenched his thirst at Brown's Tavern.

The building was purchased by the Andover Bank in 1977, with the intentions of tearing down the structure to build a new modern bank building.

After a hard fought battle by local residents, the bank relented and agreed to renovate the historic building.  These articles detail the history of this fight while providing background on both the building and the Brown Family.

The following document is the commission of Jonathan Brown to the rank of Colonel of the Seventh Regiment of Militia in the County of Middlesex.   What makes this document especially interesting is that it was signed with great flourish on July 1, 1781 by Massachusetts Governor John Hancock.   The document shows that Hancock's legendary signature is not a myth!
