Home > Events > Tewksbury Historical Society Presentation on "Schools in South Tewksbury". The Tewksbury Historical Society will have a presentation about the Old Shawsheen School and other schools in Tewksbury's past starting in 1771 and going to the present. This presentation will start at 7 p.m. on June 9 at the Tewksbury Public Library. The Historical Society will have its Annual Meeting at 6:30 p.m., preceding this presentation. Mr. Eugene Winter, the Society's Archivist will speak on the significance and meaning the word "Shawsheen" and how it relates to Tewksbury and regional history. Mr. David Marcus, the Society's president will give a biography of Tewksbury Schools in south Tewksbury. He will speak about the Squadron Schools, the South School, the old and new Shawsheen Schools, the Trahan School, and the Heath Brook School. The program will be finished by a special presentation by third grade students from the Trahan School. Mrs. Trodi Hennemuth's class has been surveying Alumni of the old Shawsheen School and they will be presenting a brief presentation and will display the results of their project called, "Memories of the Shawsheen School." The students have been working very hard to gather information on the old building. The linking of present students and past Shawsheen School graduates has been a terrific way for these students to appreciate the many years of quality education in Tewksbury. People will be able to view the results of this history project. A display of artifacts from the old Shawsheen School will be set up for viewing at the Library. The Tewksbury Historical Society will be celebrating its tenth year and has been active in presentations on other topics. Last fall they presented "Shawsheen Street before Pavement" and two years ago had a speaker on south Tewksbury. David Marcus has been investigating the South School and may have a surprise announcement about the school which closed in the 1890s. The Tewksbury Historical Society is a non-profit organization with a mission of preserving and documenting the history of Tewksbury. The organization has received several monetary donations in the past 10 years which are now in the Society's Building and Acquisition Fund. They have also accepted several large collections of photographs and several collections of Tewksbury artifacts. These have been used in several shows in the past several years. The Society is always welcoming new members. Membership is open to citizens and friends of Tewksbury. The Society has several newsletters a year and 3 to 4 open membership meetings each year.
