The Tewksbury Historical Society is proud to announce that our Archivist, Eugene C. Winter, Jr., was selected as the 2005 Recipient of the prestigious Crabtree Award.

The  Society For American Archaeology announced that  Eugene C. Winter, Jr. of Lowell is the 2005 Recipient of the Crabtree Award,  to be awarded in Salt Lake City at their Annual Meeting on April 1, 2005. This national award, established in 1985, recognizes significant contributions to archaeology made by an individual who has had little if any formal training in archaeology and little if any wage or salary as an archaeologist. The award is named after Don Crabtree of Twin Falls Idaho.

Mr. Winter’s  love of archaeology began as a boy, riding his bike from Tewksbury to the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology in Andover, MA and asking the janitor if he could look around. Gene never stopped traveling to that institution. Winter has published a number of  articles and performed contract work for the Massachusetts Historical Commission. He has been  involved with major archaeological excavations  including the Bull Brook Site in Ipswich and the Governor Smythe Site in Manchester, NH at Amoskeag Falls. He taught archaeology classes at Northern Essex Community College and at the Robert S. Peabody Museum. Gene has taught his field to both youngsters and adults.   Recently he joined the successful struggle to keep the doors of the Museum open. His love of archaeology has never diminished as is evidenced by his continual commitment to teaching and explaining what he knows to whomever expresses an interest!

Mr. Winter was born and raised on Shawsheen Street in Tewksbury as were his father, Eugene C. Winter, Sr. and his siblings, Lois, Richard and Audrey. His father attended the original East Street School. (His mother, Jessie nee Lennox, was from Dracut).  His grandmother, Laura Winter (nee Clark), lived on an adjacent family farm of more than 75 acres.  The Winter-Clark family have been Tewksbury residents since the early 19th Century.

Gene attended Foster Grammar School and graduated from Tewksbury High School, Class of 1946 After graduating from the State Teachers College at Lowell (now U Mass Lowell), Mr. Winter was stationed in Iceland with the US Army during the Korean War. After his military service, Mr. Winter began his educational career in Middleton, MA first as a teacher and later as Principal of the Howe-Manning School, acquiring his Masters of Education from Boston University along the way.  He retired  from the Middleton school district in 1992.

Currently Gene is the Honorary Curator of the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology, Andover; Museum Coordinator of the Robbins Museum in Middleboro; a member of the Society for American Archaeology, the Massachusetts Archaeology Society  (MAS) and the Northeast Chapter of the MAS. He is also a member of the Tewksbury Historical Society.

Gene was married to the late Pearl Winter (nee Gammans), the father of Nancy Winter and currently resides in Lowell.
